Wool in the Summer

Wool in the Summer

Wearing merino wool in the summer comes with many benefits.

Everyone knows that wool is a staple for a winter wardrobe, but what about wool in the summer? Wool, specifically merino wool, performs remarkably well in warm weather and comes with a long list of summertime benefits. In fact, the harder you sweat, the more impressive wool becomes, because it evaporates sweat and eliminates odors better than any other material on the market.

We love to wear wool in the summer…

Here are some of our favorite benefits:

Odor resistant.

Wool reduces the opportunity for odors to generate because it’s more efficient than other fibers at absorbing sweat and evaporating it into the air. Sweat itself doesn't smell, but bacteria on our skin break down sweat and emit an odor. Wool pulls sweat away from your skin and evaporates it into the air, creating less chance for odor buildup.

Temperature regulating.

On a hot day, wool pulls heat and moisture away from the body, keeping you cool. On a cool day, wool pulls in moisture and actively releases heat, keeping you warm. Wool’s efficiency at absorbing and releasing moisture make it comfortable in a wide range of temperatures.

Quick drying.

Wool dries exceptionally fast. Our care instructions say to machine wash and line dry our garments. On average, you can find that your garment will dry within 12 hours. Do laundry in the evening and the next day you will have a wearable, dry garment. This makes wool an optimal choice for travel too, or when you’re quick on the go.

Breathable.

Wool fibers are naturally breathable, which means they can absorb large amounts of moisture vapor and evaporate it easily (woolmark.com). We all know that clingy, clammy feeling when wearing non-wool materials, where odors get trapped in the garment. Wool does the work for you, allowing you to do the active things you need to do throughout the day.

Wrinkle resistant.

You won’t find the same stubborn, hard-pressed wrinkles in our wool that you experience with other materials. Also, the light creases from folding magically melt away after a short amount of wear. Ideal for packing for summer trips!

UV Protection.

Wool has natural built-in protection from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays. Merino fabrics are typically around 25-30 SPF.

Quick dry. No smell. Breathable.

One of the questions commonly asked by potential customers is: “can I really wear wool in the summer?” We asked our customers what their thoughts were on wearing wool in the summer. We asked them: Do you wear wool& in the summer? How do you find breathability, temperature regulation, sweat considerations, et cetera? Would you recommend wool in the summer to others?

Here’s what they said:

In our hottest months, I found it moisture wicking. It’s a weird combo of light but warm but cooling - it worked for the summer but also in the winter.
— Christina W.
The merino fabric is better at wicking than cotton and better at breathing than synthetic fabrics.
— Jennifer M.
I’m in the Midwest, where it can be 90F+ and humid one day, and snowing basically the next. My wool wardrobe is amazing year round - last summer, wearing my Camellia all day was far more comfortable than any cotton outfits I own.
— Carissa R.
I was a skeptic. I now basically wear wool& year round.
— Faith H.
Beautiful sunny day and it was over 80 degrees in the sun. That’s hot weather no matter what you are wearing, but my Willow performed admirably. Moisture wicking like nobody’s business…no sweaty, clingy clothes for this girl!
— Sandy B.
Indiana is hot and muggy. I work in my gardens 3-4 hours each day. Dries fast and keeps me cool. No sweat and no smell.
